The sculpture as an art form
In many ways, sculptures are the art of the people. More than paintings. More than literature.
Sculptures of great military figures in the parks of many cities are meant to inspire pride and patriotism in the country. Sculptures of great religious figures in the churches have In order to create a sense of spiritual reverence. Sculptures of great political leaders are meant to inspire people to achieve greatness. Sculptures of a society, as they often reside in accessible public places are seen by millions of people every day. They reflect society like no other art.
Sculpture like most forms of art is created with the idea of expressing a point of view. That view can be personal, political, religious, or otherwise in nature. Invariably, the view is intended to serve also to trigger an emotion in the hearts and minds of the viewer.
Determining the quality a sculpture is very difficult and the best is subjective. Artists and artists' styles in and out of fashion. But generally, any sculpture which can cause an emotion whether it is bringing tears to the eyes or joy to your heart can safely be considered art by most people.
A sculpture, though not particularly distinctive in itself, can also be considered art if has influenced other major artists or works of art. Paintings and sculptures also seem to achieve the "art" as survive the test of time. That is why prehistoric drawings that you see in museums are treated as art even though they fail the test, if a student of art painted today.
The sculpture is a unique form of art – in relation to but separate from painting, music, poetry and writing. Unlike of others, a sculpture is a work of art in three dimensions. Since its inception, a sculpture was meant to last. Sculpture pieces were created with materials that had passed the test of time – stone and marble, heavy metals such as gold and silver, and wood.
One reason art is so difficult to define is that artists, especially the most creative, often trying to break the mold, to create something new. They want to create something unlike anything else around. And often when that happens, the people of that time, they are unwilling to accept the work as art. It's too far ahead of its time. Then later, if it lasts, people gradually begin to see layers of complexity in it. They begin to understand and appreciate its meanings and nuances.
The first and even some later Pablo Picasso sculptures are a perfect example this. I remember when the 50 foot high untitled Picasso sculpture was first in the Chicago Civic Center Plaza. Many considered it an eyesore. Some newspapers filtered. And now, what was so controversial, has become an undisputed landmark for the city of Chicago.
Sculpture is truly the art of man common.

A Century of Artists Books $300.38 This splendid celebration of the illustrated book as an art form begins with remarkable works produced in France by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Gauguin at the end of the 19th century, and traces the international development of the modern illustrated book to the last decade of the 20th century. Major artists of the modern movement, among them Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, turned to the illumination of poems, classical literature, and their own writings to make books that are now collectors’ objects, luxuriously produced. Such limited editions have continued to be produced alongside other types of artists’ books aimed at a much larger audience. The more available artists’ books have served a different purpose, often expressing aesthetic and political principles, in the hands of such artists as Kasimir Malevich, Marcel Duchamp, Ed Ruscha, Joseph Beuys, and Barbara Kruger. Accompanying texts consider the historical background, complex relationships between artists and book manufacturers, technical constraints, and recent changes. |
