Compared with other painting mediums, like watercolor or acrylic or charcoal and so on, oil paintings always been a favorite medium for artists and art lovers. However, the average oil has its own peculiarities in particular about how it weathers over time.

For an oil painting to retain its original luster and shape, the artist or the receiver has to keep carefully. Especially if you're an art lover or collector who owns one or several oil paintings, the best way to keep the paintings is to get some professional help to clean or restore your valuable collection.

But hiring a professional can be very costly and time. If you follow a few simple steps with care, can effectively clean oil paintings on their own. Here are some steps to follow guidelines and instructions on how to clean oil paint yourself.

1. Use brushes soft

To maintain the quality of oil painting always give stress on the use of very soft brush to remove dirt. While dust an oil painting, be sure not to bend the canvas, or remove oil paint stroke painting. Avoid dust from peeling paint loose as doing so may damage the paint completely.

2. Use mild solvent

If the original oil painting is in good shape but the varnish is old enough, you can apply a mild solvent called conservation liquid for cleaning. Use the solvent with a cotton swab and apply to much paint care. To be on the safe side, it is advisable to test the reaction of the solvent by applying it in a corner before attempting the entire canvas. Use the solvent in a location with adequate ventilation.

3. Clean the back of the painting

You should also pay attention to the back of painting and regularly clean the brush or vacuum. But before cleaning the back, remove the painting from its frame and place on a clean surface. You can remove dirt Vacuuming with the help of a small nozzle with a brush. If possible you can also use a cover on the back of the painting to prevent accumulation dust behind the painting.

4. Stop bacterial growth

For a new oil painting, chances are accumulation of dirt, smoke, and any bacterial or fungal growth. After making sure the paint is showing no cracks or chips, dust from the surface carefully with a toothbrush or shaving cream brush. Also make sure the paint is not accumulating moisture in any form, that would totally damage the paint in the long term.

5. Remove the surface dirt

If the dirt on the front surface of the painting can not be removed by dusting, you can use cotton pads moistened with distilled water. The cotton is slightly rolled at the surface to remove dirt.

6. Avoid extra decoration

Additional decorations such as placing live plants paints should be avoided at all costs as insect pests and can stain and damage oil painting frame.

7. Take expert help

Take the help of experts qualified to clean or restore any oil painting that is covered in dust or yellowed varnish has completely. These paintings can not be cleaned adequately by the beginners. If you try to make a picture look brighter with some helpful tips that could damage it completely.
