Kandinsky retrospective at the Centre Pompidou, Paris

For the first time in 25 years, the public is able to see a major retrospective of the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky work. The exhibition of more than one hundred works proposed together with the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus of Munich and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of New York, all three have the largest public collections of works by the artist. The exhibition opens at the Centre Pompidou, April 8, 2009 until August 10, 2009.

This retrospective of the work of one of the key figures of the 20th century, examines the artist's contribution to modern art and its relationship with artists and ideas of his time. A theoretical as well as an artist, Kandinsky founded the Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) in Munich before the First World War and a major proponent of the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau during the war.

The founding father of abstraction, Kandinsky was a central figure in the modernist movement. The retrospective shows the evolution from Kandinky fluid and organic to geometric and pictorial to the abstract.

Born in Moscow, Kandinsky spent his childhood in Odessa. He spent time in the University of Moscow and chose to study law and economics. He started painting studies (life drawing and anatomy) at the age of 30 when he was a professor at the University Dorpat.

In 1896 he settled in Munich and studied at the private school of Anton AZBE and then at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. He returned to Moscow in 1914 after World War I began. He returned to Germany in 1921, when he taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture from 1922 until the Nazis closed in 1933.
During the war, he moved to France and lived there for the rest of his life.
He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1944.
