Can you Buy Art work, frame it, and then sell the Framed Art at a profit?

If I Purchase Art work prints of famous, living artists and frame the prints, can I sell the framed prints for profit or is that infringing on an copyright laws?

Assuming that the copied print was made legally (i.e. the art was in the public domain or the artist granted a license for the printer to print the print {say that three times fast}) and assuming that you acquired the print legally (i.e. you didn’t make an unlicensed copy), something called the “first sale” doctrine protects your resale in a frame.

Note, however, that you generally CANNOT mutilate, change, or otherwise transform the artwork to create a new piece of artwork; that’s called making a “derivative work” and generally requires the consent of the copyright owner.
