How can I avoid copyright infringement when using reference photos to make art/posters?

I want to hand draw some posters for a television show and use reference photos for the characters. I don’t plan to profit financially, but I know ownership of photos and recreation of those photos is pretty touchy. Am I in the clear if I use studio-released promo photos? Or stills from the actual show? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you cite where you got the pictures then you won’t have any issues. Just notate somewhere beside the photos with a star, and on the back of the poster beside a matching star put the website or magazine where you got it.
